Video: Bonhams classic car auction in Harrogate

Waiting for Video...

A CLASSIC Ferrari in need of some tender loving care has sold for around twice what auctioneers estimated it would fetch at an auction in North Yorkshire.

The rare four-seater 1965 Ferrari 330GT 2+2 Berlinetta sold for a hammer price of £60,000 in Harrogate.

Bonhams, which put on the sale at the Great Yorkshire Showground, estimated the car would go for between £30,000 and £40,000.

The Ferrari was being sold as a restoration project after years of being stuck in a garage left it with mouldy fittings, torn seats and rusty wheels. The car’s trademark red bodywork was also left tinged with green algae.

But it is thought the car, which has 57,000 miles on the clock, could be worth £150,000 if it is brought back to its former glory.

Its eventual £60,000 price tag did not include the buyer’s premium, which will add about £9,000 to the purchaser’s bill.

The classic motor, which is unusual because it was the first Ferrari designed to be used by families and had four seats, was the last of hundreds of lots to be auctioned.

Among the more unusual items to go under the hammer was a 1945 military field kitchen. The catalogue tempted buyers by saying it was “surely the ultimate in barbecue one-upmanship” and it sold for £2,300, including the buyer’s premium.
