POLICE today renewed their efforts to trace a mystery train passenger after a man heading for Australia had his suitcase stolen before he had even left Yorkshire.

Detectives released CCTV images of the woman, on board a train from Doncaster to Manchester Airport on October 18 last year.

The unnamed traveller, from Doncaster, was about to begin a two-week holiday in Australia when his bag, including a laptop, was taken.

PC Wayne Heslop, of British Transport Police, said: “The man boarded the train with his wife at Doncaster station and placed his luggage, which included a laptop and all his possessions for a two week holiday, in the luggage racks of the train.

“As he checked his luggage at Sheffield station, he noticed that his bag had been taken.”

A police spokesman said: “Officers have conducted several lines of enquiry into the incident including speaking to passengers on the train, downloading hours of CCTV and circulating images on police intelligence systems – but to no avail.”

Detectives said the woman in the picture is believed to have “key information”.

PC Heslop added: “We are unsure at this stage if the incident is an offence or a misunderstanding, so it is vital that we urge anyone who may recognise the woman to come forward and help us to determine the circumstances behind why the bag was taken from the train”.

Anyone with information is asked to call 0800 40 50 40 or Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.
