Yorkshire holiday firms celebrate success at national awards night

STAFF at tourist destinations across the region were celebrating last night after they were named among the best England has to offer.

A self-catering holiday business in North Yorkshire, The Deep in Hull, Chatsworth House and a couple who let log cabins in Matlock were all named gold award winners in the Enjoy England Awards.

The Dovecote Barns in Kelfield, North Yorkshire, was named self catering holiday of the year at last night’s ceremony in Birmingham, while The Deep won praise for its work to make the attraction accessible.

Chatsworth House was awarded first prize in the large visitor attraction category, which is open to venues which attract more than 100,000 visitors a year, while Hoe Grange Holidays, based at Matlock in Derbyshire, also won a gold accessibility award.

The awards were organised by VisitEngland, which is charged with promoting English tourism and were sponsored by The Caravan Club.

One of the judges, Nikki Nichol, from the Caravan Club said: “I was honoured to be a judge and it truly was a tricky decision to decide on the winners from so many strong candidates.

“The passion and commitment to excellence shown by all the gold and silver winenrs is synonymous with the club’s ethos and we look forward to another bumper summer of tourism in England this year.”

The Royal Shakespeare Company, based in Stratford-upon-Avon was awarded the outstanding contribution to tourism award after judges said it had “led the way in how we think and feel about theatre.”
