Band on the run – Little Man Tate hit road for Tomlinson fundraiser
SHEFFIELD band Little Man Tate will today announce they are to run this year's Jane Tomlinson's Leeds 10K.
The Indie four-piece, who hit the Top 20 with their single Sexy in Latin, are joining the event on Sunday, June 21, to raise money for Jane's Appeal.
Little Man Tate's guitarist Maz said: "Most people would expect that bands would struggle to run 10 metres, let alone 10K, but we're up for it and as long as we do a bit of training, run, walk or crawl we'll make it to the finishing line. Hopefully we can inspire other people to do the same and raise awareness for a very worthy cause."
This lunchtime the band are due to appear in Leeds City Centre at a press call to reveal their intention to take part in the run, which is supported by the Yorkshire Post as a media partner.
Jane Tomlinson CBE, from Leeds, was diagnosed with incurable cancer in 2000. She took part in a number of high profile endurance challenges for charity, including a number of marathons, the Ironman Triathlon and a 4,800-mile bike ride across America. Before her death in September 2007 she had raised 1.85m for charity.
Last month the charity announced it had raised 2.6m and is now aiming to raise 5m.
Her widower, Mike Tomlinson said yesterday: "Little Man Tate are fantastic lads and the fact that they are going to have a go at the Leeds 10K is great and hopefully will inspire more young people to consider taking part. The Leeds 10K is a community event, for all ages and all abilities, and it means a great deal that these four rising stars are willing to give up their time and join our event and support Jane's Appeal."
Little Man Tate – front man Jon, guitarist Maz, Ben the bass and drummer Dan – also gave their support to Jane's Appeal at an event last month to celebrate the charity reaching 2m .
The Jane Tomlinson Leeds 10k 2009 starts from Millennium Square and takes in many of the city's landmarks. It is a charitable event for people of all abilities, whether they choose to jog, walk, run, wheel or watch. For details visit www.runforall.com
