Becky Lyne targets injury-free 2009

SHEFFIELD middle-distance runner Becky Lyne will be back in full training for the start of 2009 as she looks to revive her career.

After winning a bronze medal in the 800m at the European Championships in August 2006, Lyne suffered a string of injury setbacks which resulted in the 26-year-old missing the Beijing Olympics.

She was making good progress after recovering fully from the calf injury which has been her main problem since her third-place finish in Gothenburg.

But four weeks ago the Sheffielder suffered a broken wrist which has prevented her running, although she has continued to maintain her fitness with plenty of gym work.

"I was getting in some really good sessions before I broke the wrist putting away a trampoline at the boarding school where I work," said Lyne.

"The cast will be on for another two weeks and then I'll be able to resume full training."

The 26-year-old sustained the problematic calf injury during a warm-weather training stint in Australia early last year.

She recovered sufficiently to be selected for the 2007 World Championships but withdrew from the Team GB squad and began an extensive period of rehabilitation which caused her to withdraw from another Australian training camp at the beginning of 2008.

Lyne was determined to qualify for the Olympics but missed out in the trials.

"That made me decide to I call it a day for the season, have some rest and plenty of treatment from (physio) Ali Rose before getting ready for 2009," said Lyne.

She will now target the World Championships, which will be staged in Berlin next August.

Lyne added: "I'll be able to train again properly in the new year and I'm hoping to go to South Africa in January for warm-weather training."
