As the election approaches, the Conservatives have provoked a row with the unions over plans to ban them from taking strike action without the support of at least 40 per cent of their members in certain sectors.

Many bosses will welcome this move, but the unions are furious, with many seeing it as an extension of Margaret Thatcher’s policies of the 1980s.
