Vince Cable is safe in his job as Business Secretary until the next general election, Nick Clegg has said.
The Deputy Prime Minister made clear Mr Cable would not be moved in the expected Cabinet reshuffle, even though his close ally, Lord Oakeshott, was implicated in a botched plot to unseat Mr Clegg as Liberal Democrat leader.
“I am immensely proud of what Vince has done,” Mr Clegg told the BBC1 Sunday Politics programme.
“I absolutely intend to make sure that Vince continues to serve in the Government in his present capacity.”
Mr Cable was forced to disown Lord Oakeshott after it emerged that the peer had commissioned polling which was apparently designed to undermine Mr Clegg’s position in the wake of the disastrous showing by the Liberal Democrats in the May European and local council elections.
