The Calendar Girls have got naked again but its all in the best possible taste and for a good cause.
As well as a new calendar for 2012 the Girls have launched a range of merchandise featuring iconic lines from the feature film of their amazing story.
The new range includes bags, aprons, badges and mugs, with money raised going to blood cancer charity Leukaemia & Lymphoma Research.
They will be on sale at theatres as the Calendar Girls stage show tours the UK, or online at beatbloodcancershop.com
To date, the Calendar Girls have raised more than £3m for the charity since 1999 when Angela Baker and friends from North Yorkshire’s Rylstone and District Women’s Institute decided to pose nude for a calendar.
Their story went worldwide and was turned into a Hollywood movie starring Helen Mirren and Julie Walters.
The 2012 calendar, launched at Marks & Spencer in Leeds yesterday, depicts the Girls posing semi-nude around a piano singing Jerusalem in true WI style.
Angela Baker, Miss February, said: “I like to think the products reflect the spirit of the Calendar Girls – tastefully cheeky.”
The power of a naked photo opportunity to raise money for charity has not been lost on others.
Yesterday Colin Dobson, an electrician from Hemsworth, West Yorkshire, announced his latest fundraiser for the Motor Neurone Disease Association.
On July 10 he plans to walk naked or semi-naked from Workington in Cumbria to Sunderland.
He hopes to complete the 130-mile coast-to-coast walk in five days, hopefully without getting arrested.
“For legal reasons, although I will be naked, my ‘family jewels’ will be covered in populated areas,” he said.
