Chaos ensued at a Yorkshire supermarket over the weekend after an elderly driver smashed her car through the windows and injured a member of staff.
The red Ford Fiesta reversed into the Waitrose supermarket in York on Saturday afternoon, leaving one staff member with cuts and bruises and shoppers looking on in shock.
Fire crews were called out to help the female driver, who had escaped unscathed, from the vehicle.
One customer described the moment the car smashed through the store’s windows, saying she was stood just feet away when it struck.
The customer, who didn’t want to be named, said she had been stood getting a cup of coffee when she saw the car reverse towards the window before hearing an almighty bang.
She added: “Then an absolutely excellent youg man - a customer - took control of the situation,” she said.
“I don’t know who he was but he was reassuring the driver and keeping her calm.”
Another shopper said: “The whole thing was terrifying, nobody knew what had happened. There was a lot of broken glass and screaming.”
A Waitrose spokesman said on Saturday night: “Thankfully nobody was seriously injured and we’re very grateful to the emergency services for their prompt and expert response.”
