ANTHONY Pithers, a former Royal Navy missile specialist, has died suddenly in Spain.
He served in the Royal Navy for many years as an electronics expert and was responsible for maintaining ordinance and missiles on many of the Navy’s ships.
Upon retirement he worked as a specialist in radar development, attached to the Ministry of Defence.
After living in Market Harborough, Leicestershire, he moved to Javea, near Alicante, Spain, where he died this week from a suspected heart attack. He had only recently returned to Yorkshire and Wiltshire to celebrate his 70th birthday with family and friends.
He was the son of Lt Cmdr Charles Pithers, mentioned in Dispatches for his bravery during the Second World War. His eldest son, Darran, also served in the Royal Navy.
His brother Malcolm, a former Yorkshire Post journalist and author, said: “I cannot believe my brother has gone. He was a gregarious, happy man who served his country well. He spent many years doing an essential role within the Royal Navy and travelled the world, often under very, very difficult conditions. Thankfully, he was also blessed with having a very close family and many friends. To me he was more than brother. He was my friend and I will miss him greatly.”
Mr Pithers attended St Austin’s RC School in Wakefield, where he was born and was a deeply religious man. He leaves his wife, June, three children, Darran, Karl and Meichele.
