Dick Hawdon
DICK Hawdon, the former head of the Jazz Studies department of Leeds College of Music, and a highly-regarded professional trumpet player, died on Tuesday at the age of 82.
Mr Hawdon, who lived in Leeds, played with some of the biggest names in British jazz, including Chris Barber and John Dankworth. He also worked in cabaret with stars of the calibre of Tony Bennett, Eartha Kitt and Matt Monro.
Leeds-born Mr Hawdon played with the Yorkshire Jazz Band before moving to London and eventually joining Dankworth, with whom he played at the Newport Jazz Festival, in the United States, in 1959, the first time a British group had been invited to perform there.
In the 1960s, as jazz work became scarcer, Mr Hawdon got a part-time teaching job at Leeds College of Music, and in 1967 went full-time. The course at Leeds was the first full-time jazz education in Europe.
Mr Hawdon is survived by his wife, Barbara, two daughters, a son, and six grandchildren.
