Margaret Butterfield

MARGARET Elaine Butterfield a dedicated Yorkshire primary school teacher who was devoted to her work has died aged 84.

She spent more than 40 years at Harewood Church of England Primary School, from 1956 until she retired in the 1970s, having started her teaching career at Starbeck Primary School, in Harrogate in the late 1940s.

Miss Butterfield was respected by both fellow teachers and pupils who remembered her particularly for the standards she set for conduct, social behaviour, good manners and politeness for all the children in her care.

She numbered some of her former pupils among the many people she kept in contact with as an enthusiastic letter writer, and she had pen friends worldwide.

She was born in Shadwell, on the outskirts of Leeds, the only child of Violet and Albert Butterfield who was a fish merchant.

She was educated at Roundhay High School for Girls, in Leeds, and the City of Leeds Training College from where she qualified as a teacher in 1947.

A friendly, courteous and quiet person, she was acknowledged by her head teacher at Roundhay School to possess a gift for dealing with young children with sympathy and common sense, having lively and interesting ideas.

She was a very keen traveller within Europe both before and after her retirement, which led to her making many friends.

Miss Butterfield, who lived in Harrogate, never married.
