York’s National Railway Museum has launched a countdown to the nation’s celebration of the 75th anniversary of Mallard breaking the world steam speed record.

To mark the beginning of the 75-day countdown museum staff yesterday
decked the garter blue steam icon with a specially-designed Mallard 75 headboard
and nameplate and celebratory
balloons.

Visit York will be displaying the countdown on their website.

On July 3, the calendar anniversary of Doncaster-built Mallard’s record-breaking run, Mallard and her five surviving sister A4 Pacific Class locomotives will be gathered together at the museum – a sight never seen before. The Great Gathering of Mallard and her sisters takes place July 3–17. Details of anniversary events can be found at nrm.org.uk/mallard75
