Green drive involving over 20,000 homes to boost jobs

A £10m investment to improve the energy efficiency of more than 20,000 homes in Leeds will create 200 jobs.

The Leeds City Region Partnership has secured the private sector funding to make eligible residents’ homes warmer and cut fuel bills through grants.

The scheme, known as the Domestic Energy Efficiency Programme (DEEP), aims to reduce household carbon emissions in Leeds by 35 per cent by 2020.

Coun Peter Box, chair of the partnership and leader of Wakefield City Council, said: “At a time of rising fuel bills this funding will have a significant impact on thousands of households and will support local jobs.

“By working together, the Partnership has been able to secure greater levels of private investment than would otherwise have been the case, particularly for those residents in the greatest need.”

Meanwhile, a mail campaign is underway to remind residents in three Yorkshire cities they may be eligible for a Government grant to heat their homes during this cold spell.

Letters will be sent to 675,000 homeowners in Sheffield, Leeds and Bradford raising awareness of the Warm Front scheme, which offers contributions towards insulation up to £3,500 or discounts on fuel bills.
