'Golden oldie' Sheila hacks in at first attempt

Many Yorkshire owners and breeders are celebrating success at the Horse of the Year Show but perhaps none more so than Sheila Fenwick.

At the age of 78, she was making her first visit to the famous event where she saw her four-year-old mare, Baydale Venus, take the Hack of the Year title.

It was a surprise for everybody concerned, including producer Jerome Harforth, rider Simon Charlesworth and, not least, Sheila.

"I am thrilled," said Sheila, who lives at Eshton near Gargrave and has been breeding horses for 40 years, mainly hunters and eventers.

"It's all very exciting. She is only four and they have to be so well behaved with all the lights and everything. She was rock solid throughout. Simon Charlesworth coped with her brilliantly."

Jerome Harforth spotted the youngster's potential and she has been with him since January last year.

Baydale Venus is by the Abram family's sire Buskhill Gunnar out of Baydale Jura and is the fourth generation of Sheila's breeding.

Venus qualified for HOYS at Ponies UK. At the British Show Horse Association's Championship Show, she was first and reserve champion in both the novice and open classes.

Jerome Harforth, from the Stanley Grange Stud at Great Ayton, also took runner-up and reserve champion in the pony section of the Cuddy Championship with Jennifer Gilchrists's brood mare Rotherwood Flamenco besides having a fifth with Sue Grimshaw's Moluccas Perfect Peppercorn and a seventh with Ian Darcy's Minora Bay in the horse section.

The stable also had a ninth with Military Crisis in the riding horse, and show ponies Wescoe Regal Charm, Holoowmarsh Oliver and Trelawn Kingfisher had placings with Lizzie Smith and Melissa McCluskey.

Craig Elenor from Borrowby had a third with the three-year-old Demezza and a fourth with Clare and Glen Merrigan-Martin's three-year-old coloured colt Merrigan's Legacy in the Cuddy Supreme Horse Section. Legacy was reserve supreme at the Great Yorkshire, supreme at Kent County and the CHAPS Championship.

Clare, Peter and Sarah Emmerson, from Stokesley, had a second in the 153cm show hunter section for Lindy Burnip riding Seatshill Little Rogue by Kilvington Scoundrel, previously owned by Liz Lorrimar. Lindy's sister Danielle was sixth in the 133cm section with Antoinette's Catamount.

The Emmersons, well known for producing lead rein and first ridden ponies, had a fifth and eighth in the Colne Lead Rein with Anna Tuer riding Twyford Tailor Made and Jessica Reed riding Thamevalley Blackjack.

In the open lead rein, they had a fifth with Ellie Reynard riding Jo Prendergast's Chaseford Aloof and a fifth in the first ridden for Holly Aitken riding Westway Twilight Rose.

Jack Starkie won the ridden mountain and moorland Dartmoor, Shetland and Exmoor section and was second reserve champion with the Dartmoor stallion Pumphill Bennett, bred and owned by David Hinde and Jack's parents Helen and Paul Bennett.

Pumphill Buckthorn, ridden by Sarah Challoner was sixth in the ridden and fifth in the mountain and moorland working hunter. Both ponies are out of David's 1999 Cuddy Supreme mare Pumphill Belladonna.

Rosemary Hetherington, from Middleham, was delighted when Jack Cockrane took the lightweight cob and reserve champion with her horse Hallmark IX.

Doncaster's Charles Le Moignam took the small hunter championship with Peter Bowdler's eight-year-old Unlimited by Rotspun. Charles also had a fourth in the Topspec Lightweight hunter, riding the five-year-old Sutton Place and eighth in the large hack with Dazzle.

James Hunton, 25, from Stokesley, began show producing two years ago and qualified three horses for HOYS. Brookfarm Heaven Scent (Poppy), owned and bred by Clare Merrigan-Martin, was ridden by 10-year-old Samantha Elliott, finishing second in the 138cm coloured non native pony class and going on to be coloured reserve champion to Jayne Webber's Humdinger.

Tidkin Royal Mannequin, another coloured non native pony, owned by James Hunton and Steph Towers and ridden by Alice Newson was fourth in her class on Alice's first HOYS outing.

The Burkin family from Sand Hutton, York had their best result at the show when their 12-year-old mare, Rotherwood Flight of Fancy, took the 148cm show pony of the year title.

It was a first HOYS win, too, for 17-year-old jockey Emma Dewhurst.

Emma Blundell from Felixkirk was runner-up in the Intermediate show hunter, riding the 13-year-old Forrest and Sarah Ambler, from Halifax was fifth in the large riding horse with Intrepid. Gemma Stanford, from Hull, was third in the Cuddy Pony with her Highland stallion Tower Clyde and Samantha Brayshaw, from Beckwithshaw ,was fourth in the show hunter pony with Burfordly Sea Lord.
