Helping hand required to compete in Special Olympics
SIX riders from the Dearne Valley Special Olympics Group will be representing the Yorkshire and Humber region in the 2009 Special Olympics GB National Summer Games in Leicester from July 25-30.
A total of 2,700 athletes are expected to compete in 21 sports at the games, supported by 1,200 coaches and volunteers.
The equestrian team includes Adrian Day, 47 from Withernsea; Kate Stuckey, 20 from Worksop; Tanika Foster, 16 from Leeds; Ryan Martinwood, 14 from Sheffield; Christopher Walton, 14 from Chapeltown, Sheffield and Daniel Hudson, 13 from Rotherham.
Tanika is struggling to raise funds in order to compete. She is moderately deaf and has learning difficulties. "There is no governing body that can provide funding and support, simply because there aren't that many deaf people who want to ride," said her mother Tracy. "Since taking up horse riding and attending the Leeds Deaf Youth Club, Tanika's confidence has soared and she has proved that disabilities do not hold you back."
Leeds Society for Deaf and Blind People is raising money to help cover Tanika's costs of competing. She will need special radio hearing aids which cost 1,300.
