Largest Shire Horse show set for big influx of entrants
THE highlight of the year for heavy horse enthusiasts, the Shire Horse Society’s Spring Show, is being held at the East of England Showground next month.
Final preparations are currently being made for the show, which attracts spectators from all over this country and overseas.
A number of owners travel from Switzerland, Holland and Sweden to show their horses at this event.
More than 200 Shires will be competing at the show which is regarded as the national championships and is the largest shire horse show in the world.
“The horses that compete at the Spring Show are the best in the country and so this really is a unique opportunity for everyone,” said David Ralley-Davies, secretary of the Society.
“Everyone who supports the show is supporting shire horses and will be playing their part in preserving the breed’s future in Britain.”
The King George V Cup will be awarded to the most impressive stallion and there will be a number of other trophies to be won over the weekend.
There are classes for showing in-hand, harness, turn-outs and for ridden horses. There is also a farriery competition and an auction of Shire horse memorabilia.

The Sinngton point-to-point, due to have been held at Duncombe Park last weekend, had to be cancelled due to frost and snow.
The organisers are now planning to run it on Saturday, weather permitting. There are eight races, with the concluding maiden race being divided three ways.
There are 26 entries for the Confined Hunts race.
Forsomeonelikeyou enjoys this course and won his restricted race at Duncombe Park last year.
Lem Putt could be in with a chance and Forge Valley could also follow up his recent success at North Carlton.
The Mixed Open should prove another competitive race, with recent winner Amicelli among the line up. Others runners to watch include Keeverfield, Moment of Madness and Sheriff Hutton.
The Sinngton run one of the Point-to-Point Owners and Riders Association Veteran and Novice riders’ races, although the novice riders are likely to outnumber the veterans on this occasion. Desert Tommy was a winner at Sheriff Hutton but Will Milburn and The Ring will challenge.
The Brocklesby point-to-point is also taking place on Saturday at Brocklesby Park, just off the A18 near Humberside airport. The first of eight races is due off at 12.30pm.
