Richmond unearths stars of the future

TWO new young champions have emerged in the past month from Peter Richmond's yard near Ripon.

The youngsters, with what looks to be an exciting future ahead of them, are the two-year-old hunter gelding Highlane Riley, owned by Joanne Rooke of Newton-on-Ouse, York and the three-year-old filly Favourite Star, bred and owned by Ros Croft of Chipping, Lancashire.

Highlane Riley won the North Yorkshire County on his first outing with Richmond and then went on to win the Youngstock Championship where the reserve champion was Primitive Peregrine, also owned and shown by Joanne Rooke. Riley went on to win the Supreme In Hand Championship later in the day.

On his next outing at the Yorkshire Sport Horse Show at Hambleton, he won his class.

At the Northern Horse Show, he won his class and was champion In Hand Hunter, which entitled him to go forward to the Cuddy In Hand qualifier for the Horse of the Year Show later in the day. Here he was up against 27 other champions of the day but, to the delight of his owner and the Richmond team, he duly won, qualifying for HOYS.

Until recently Joanne Rooke owned the successful small show hunter Highlane Milo, also produced and ridden by Peter Richmond.

Favourite Star is home-bred by Ros Croft and the Richmond family have shown for her for many years. Star was reserve champion and best mare in the Hunter Youngstock at Hambleton Show, which was her first time in the show ring. At the Yorkshire Sport Horse Show, she won her three-year-old class and was Youngstock Champion.

"We are delighted with both of them, they are outstanding youngsters," said Peter Richmond.
