Royal seal of approval as Bishop Burton's plans develop

Princess Anne took a keen interest in the developments at Bishop Burton College when she officially opened the new £3m equine outdoor arena and a £4.5m learning resource centre there this week.

The Princess Royal, a former Olympic rider, has visited the college on a number of occasions.

The college has been approved as a training base for the London Olympic Games and will host the World Polocross for the first time in 2011. It is currently undergoing a 25m re-development programme.

During her visit, the Princess watched a demonstration in the outdoor riding school by Level One students, who were practising a range of riding skills, while in the new indoor arena a Pro-Am show jumping competition was underway. The BBC's Stephen Hadley provided a commentary and the course was designed by BSJA course builder Di Boddy.

The professional riders included Carl Curtis, Matthew Wright, Gary Parsonage, Morgan Kent, James Hughes, Matthew Boddy and David Clarkson.

Bishop Burton student Jodie Ward was also selected to compete as a Pro rider on her Nations' Cup horse Caloux Z.

A total of 16 professional riders paired up with students and the winning team was Laura Neilson and student Becky Pass with a combined score of 83.37. The Princess presented rosettes to the top three pairs.

Following the Pro-Am competition, a speed round was held over the same course. This was won by local rider Gary Parsonage on Peterstreet with a score of 46.3.

Pro–Am: 1, Laura Neilson, Becky Pass 83.37; 2, Michael Potter, Dale Hitchens 107.60; 3, James Hughes Laura Birch E; 4, Matthew Boddy Charlie Flood 90.13; 5, Phillip Curtis Laura Sharp 135.35.

Speed Class: 1, Gary Parsonage 46.3; 2, Laura Neilson 46.4; 3, Mike Potter 47.52; 4, Matthew Wright 48.07; 5, Carl Curtis 48.37.

Peter DeCosemo, a well known rider in Yorkshire in the 1980s, is back in this country and teaching again. He made a name for himself while working at the Yorkshire Riding Centre at Markington with Jane and Christopher Bartle. He then went to train in Germany where he competed up to Grand Prix level in dressage.

His next move was to Portland, Oregon where he concentrated on training and public speaking as well as setting up a business designing and manufacturing saddles. It was this side of his business that brought DeCosemo back to England. After running the company for a time here, he has sold it and is back coaching and giving demonstrations.

DeCosemo will be at Ledston Equine Centre on Monday evening to give a demonstration organised by the Harewood Combined Training Group.

"I'll be showing people how to deal with three horses, all with different problems," he said. "They are either nervous or tense or lacking in confidence and I'll be showing how to get your horse to trust what you are doing, all of it related to dressage and show jumping."

For more information and tickets call 01937 582851; 07946 590967 or email sue.dent@tiscali.co.uk. The demonstration starts at 7.30pm and tickets will be available on the door.

Members of the public, jockeys, trainers and owners are being invited to have a look at the new North Carlton Point-to-Point Racecourse at the Lincolnshire Showground during an open day on Sunday, November 23.

From February 1 next year, the point-to-point meetings which used to be held at Market Rasen and Garthorpe racecourses will be staged on the new track built on the western side of the showground on land owned by the Lincolnshire Agricultural Society.

Members of the Burton and Blankney Hunts formed a joint committee to manage the development of the new course, chaired by Bill Henson.

The 1.3-mile course cost 40,000 to build and has been part-funded through the sale of patrons' packages which include entry for up to four people over the next five years.

"Before they were held at Market Rasen racecourse, the point-to-point meetings were staged at the old Carholme racecourse in Lincoln so we are delighted to have secured a new purpose-built track so close to the city.

"I am sure that the local people with give it their full support," said Bill.

The total length of the track can be seen from the old Roman road which runs through the Lincolnshire Showground and creates natural raised viewing.

The first fixtures at the North Carlton Point-to-Point racecourse will be held on February 1 and March 1 next year.
