Smith at the top again after seeing off Beverley
FOUR polo teams from Yorkshire competed for the Summit Polo Cup in a tournament organised by the White Rose Polo Club at North Cliffe, near Market Weighton.
The teams – Summit, Toulston, Beverley and White Rose – provided some top-class action for spectators with the Summit team beating Beverley 7-1 in the final to retain their title.
The Pony Club would not be able to function without its vast army of volunteers who give up their time to do everything from instructing to running camps, organising competitions and generally encouraging children with their riding.
Every year those who have passed the landmark of at least 20 years of voluntary help are honoured by the Cubitt Awards.
The awards are named after the late Guy Cubitt who was chairman of The Pony Club for 25 years and president for nine years. This year the club is celebrating its 80th anniversary and the awards were presented in Stratford-upon-Avon by his daughters, Lady Carew and Sylvia Dallas.
Seven of the 33 awards went to volunteers in Yorkshire.
Helen Hughes (24 years) has been a member of the Bramham Moor branch since 1985, including being District Commissioner. Six awards were to long serving members of the Hurworth branch.
Pat Arrand (30-plus years) has been chief instructor and is Area 3's Tetrathlon chairman.
Sheila Dennis (40-plus years) whose many roles include committee member, camp cook and branch secretary.
Barbara Irvine (35 years) has been road safety trainer, instructor and for the past 10 years, branch president.
Liz Moore (30-plus years) has played a major role as instructor and is retiring as District Commissioner after 14 years.
Christine Ridsdale (28 years) has been branch treasurer and a committee member since 1981.
Anne Stockdale (31-plus years) has held many branch secretarial jobs, been camp organiser and is assistant District Commissioner.
Nicola, Philip and Katy Tyler, from the Springwater Stud, Pickhill, took the supreme in-hand championship at the Northern Dartmoor Show held at Osbaldeston Riding Centre, near Blackburn.
They did it with the three-year-old filly Springwater Tatyana by Moortown Countryman (stallion of the year in 2006, 2007 and 2008 and was a novice-ridden winner at the show with Rebecca Penny) out of Springwater Symphony.
Tatyana, led by Katy, took the overall young stock, filly and female championship and also took the Top of the North Championship receiving the June Little Trophy.

They followed on with reserves in both the overall young stock male and Top of the North Championship.
Langfield Binth, bred by Madge and Paul by Shilstone Rocks Day of Fury out of Langfield Noilly Prat and ridden by Harriet Lister, took the beginners first ridden.
Charlotte Blythman, from Stokesley, was delighted when her mother Julie's seven-year-old gelding, Newoak Storyteller – by Hisley Cravat out of Jurstonparke Eliza and bred by Joyce and Jacky Newbery – took reserve supreme in the ridden section.
