Making bread can be an education
FARMERS and millers and bakers are being asked to volunteer to help children make their own bread, starting with a packet of seed.
The Real Bread Campaign will launch its second Bake Your Lawn campaign on Monday, with the help of Tom Herbert, one of the stars of Channel 4’s new series The Fabulous Baker Brothers.
He will visit a primary school at Horsley, near his home in Gloucestershire, to help sow a patch of organic wheat.
Teachers and other youth group leaders can order a packet of similar seed, for planting between now and late April, from.realbreadcampaign.org for the £2 cost of postage, and guidance on growing it and turning it into flour and then bread can be downloaded from the site too.
The Real Bread Campaign is calling on professional farmers, millers and bakers, to see if they can help a local school get involved. But because children are involved, the growing will have to be achieved without the usual agrochemicals. Volunteers looking for schools to get involved with can email realbread@sustainweb.org/
Tom Herbert said: “I’m really looking forward to showing kids how easy it is to make lush loaves of real bread. The planting is where the natural magic begins.”
Horsley Primary School headteacher Martin Fry said: “Bake Your Lawn is a great scheme for schools. It gives pupils an understanding of bread by taking them on an inspirational journey through the whole process from seed to sandwich.”
The Real Bread Campaign is part of the charity Sustain, which calls itself “the alliance for better food and farming” and is funded by the Big Lottery Fund and The Sheepdrove Trust. The campaign encourages people to eat more local loaves, baked without the use of artificial additives or hidden processing aids. It runs a directory of approved bakers.
