David Ellam, 52, died in hospital in August last year after he was bitten near his home in the town’s Sheepridge area.

Aaron Joseph, 29, appeared at Leeds Crown Court where he denied being the owner of a dog which caused injury while dangerously out of control in a public place.

Police were called to the incident in Riddings Road on August 15 and Mr Ellam was taken to Huddersfield Royal Infirmary where he was later pronounced dead.

Joseph, of Riddings Road, pleaded guilty to possessing a quantity of cannabis on the same date.

The Recorder of Leeds, Judge Peter Collier QC, fixed a provisional trial date of February 5 next year but said he hoped that could be brought forward.

Joseph was released on conditional bail.
