Homes have been evacuated in Selby after suspected hazardous material was found in a flat.

Police searched the property at Cockret Court in Cockret Road yesterday following the arrest of a 60-year-old man.

He had been arrested shortly before 3pm on suspicion of racially or religiously aggravated harassment and criminal damage.

Once the material was found, police and other emergency services evacuated neighbouring flats within a 100m radius.

A North Yorkshire Police spokeswoman said: "Local residents are being supported and temporary shelter is being provided nearby.

"The area is cordoned off and there will be disruption to the surrounding area as emergency services attend the scene."
