A woman who was found with a head injury in Whitby is fighting for her life.

Police were alerted at 6.45am today after the 45-year-old woman was found on Henrietta Street near the 199 steps.

She was airlifted to James Cook Hospital in Middlesbrough, where her injuries were described as “life-threatening.”

A North Yorkshire Police spokesman said: “The woman’s injuries are being treated as unexplained at this time and officers are investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident.

“The area around the 199 steps has been cordoned off and officers would like to thank the public for their patience while they complete their enquiries at the scene.”

Anyone with information is urged to contact North Yorkshire Police on 101, select option one, and pass information to the Force Control Room.

They are asked to quote reference number NYP-14082014-0053 when passing information about the incident.
