Farmers' boost
FARMERS have customarily enjoyed so little cheer in recent years that the award of a £120m frozen vegetables contract by supermarket giant Asda to Leeds-based Fullers Foods International is a desperately-needed fillip.
Increased demand by the chain for a wide range of vegetables will make Fullers one of the biggest family-owned food firms in the country and the industry leader in frozen food services.
Yorkshire farmers will be among those to benefit from the deal, particularly those growing potatoes, although products will necessarily be sourced from around the world.
In terms of the scale of its business, Fullers has moved a long way from its roots which saw it founded in Victorian times on a barrow in Leeds market.
But in other ways it has remained true to itself. It is run by the fourth generation of the family and its traditional Yorkshire know how will stand it in good stead as it forges ahead – much like that of Asda, which also traces its origins back to the West Riding in the 1920s.
Both companies say they value being able to work closely with another major firm in the region. Farmers will be hoping there will be more to come as their relationship strengthens further in years ahead.
