Sue Woodcock: A weekend away and a perfect wedding

I finally got the sheep pen finished enough to be useful. Of course, when it came to getting the sheep in, a tup lamb from last year decided to try to demolish it – and very nearly succeeded. I have moved a lot of the sheep on to new pastures, leaving the ones I couldn't catch and a few favourites of mine.

Sad though I am, I have to be practical. I have neither the time nor the money to keep them all forever, and I don't have sufficient grazing.

The ducklings also left to go to their new home. The goats, however, have made themselves quite at home, and Dulcie chases the dogs with real meaning.

I took the new dog, Cecily, to the vet. I needed her checked over, and when the vet discovered she had already been spayed, she searched for a microchip. Eventually, she found one, and the dog originally came from the Cardiff area.

The microchip company had an address that didn't check out, and they are following it up. Of course, I was worried that someone would try to claim her, but no-one has, and she is now my dog and I love her very much.

I went over to Wetherby to give a talk to the wine circle there. It was like meeting old friends because I went last year and there were many folk I already knew. I like Wetherby, it is a fascinating town and the flowers are magnificent. My talk over, I drove home with the sky a magnificent rose pink as the sun set, and the clouds were like an artist's palette. There have been some glorious evening skies recently. There is little light pollution here, so I can wonder at them.

I got rid of all my scrap metal to my friend who deals in that sort of thing. I need to get as much done as soon as I can because I will shortly be out of action for a while because I am getting my damaged elbow fixed.

I went down to Hampshire this weekend to the wedding of two of my greatest friends. Having fixed for the animals to be looked after, I drove down south on the Friday. I made a dreadful mistake by going via the M1. It was horrendous, seeming to consist mainly of roadworks. Then I hit the M25, which wasn't much better. I stayed over with friends in Odiham where I was, many years ago, the village bobby. It has changed a lot but is still the place I enjoyed working in. There is a huge RAF base for helicopters there.

The Saturday, being the Queen's birthday, was the occasion for a military march-past at the wide and ancient high street. It wasn't just the RAF, there was a military band, a tank and soldiers in desert camouflage who were beaming with pride as the huge crowd cheered and applauded.

The afternoon was occupied with the beautiful wedding of my two friends by the River Whitewater and I really enjoyed it and meeting friends I hadn't seen for years. The weather was perfect and it was a very happy occasion. I needed to get home, so I opted out of the disco (not really my scene) and drove back, this time via the M6. I stuck religiously to the speed limits but it still took less than five hours and I got back while it was still light.

The dogs and cats were delighted to see me, and it was good to be back in Yorkshire with the noticeably purer air and no sound other than the noises of the country night.

Between the glorious spells of weather, nature has been kind and sent us enough rain to freshen the ground and let the grass grow. The whole world seems to be a splash of colour for our delight.
