Dementia support service urgently needs volunteers

Have your say

AN urgent appeal for volunteers has been launched to help provide much-need support for people with dementia.

The Royal Voluntary Service’s Dementia Support Good Neighbours Service in Doncaster provides help to older people and their families with daily tasks such as getting some shopping, walking the dog, changing a light bulb or just sitting down together for a cup of tea and a chat.

It is totally reliant on volunteers to help older people to live an independent life in their own home by providing friendly, social interaction to make sure they’re safe and well. Visits are vital for families and carers too, giving them a brief respite from the responsibilities of looking after their loved ones.

Dementia Support manager Jan Burrows said: “No two people with dementia are the same so we tailor our support package to fit the individual needs of the older person so they can carry on living in their own home and have a more active life in the community. The need for our service is growing and we would love to reach even more people but to do that we need more volunteers.”
