SHOPPERS in Sheffield were surprised to see an "escaped" crocodile slithering down Fargate, en route from its temporary home at the Lyceum Theatre, to The Moor.
The crocodile is appearing in this year's Christmas pantomime, Peter Pan, which also stars former Emmerdale actress Hayley Tamaddon and Nigel Planer from The Young Ones.
After escaping the clutches of Captain Hook on Friday, the three metre-long reptile made its way through crowds of Christmas shoppers to the outdoor Wild Planet exhibition, which features a collection of photographs of the natural world.
The exhibition, which showcases 80 photographs from past Wildlife Photographer of the Year competitions and has been brought to Sheffield by the Natural History Museum in London, will be on The Moor until March next year.
Manager at the Wild Planet retail store Rob Marks, said he suspected the crocodile was attracted by the images of its fellow wild animals.
He added: "The gift shop was full of people at the time and the last thing we expected to see lurking outside was an enormous crocodile.
"Thankfully the pantomime crocodile was reasonably friendly and it was only the thought of Captain Hook arriving that made us all worry."
