A dog which fell into the River Calder and became stranded on an island was rescued by firefighters last night.
The Staffordshire bull terrier cross was spotted by a member of the public on a small island near Hebble End, Hebden Bridge at about 8pm.
Specialist water rescue teams from Hebden Bridge and Cleckheaton attended the incident and managed to rescue the dog.
A fire service spokesman said: “We assisted in the rescue. The animal was stuck on the island and clearly distressed. Several members of the public had seen the animal. It’s unclear if it was thrown in or jumped in. We used a water sledge and a cage to bring the dog back to shore. It is now with the RSPCA.”
