A NEW online course being run by a Yorkshire university will explore how play is an important part of people’s lives from their earliest years through to adulthood.
Sheffield University is also hosting a conference about the issue today.
The MOOC (massive open online course) is entitled Exploring Play: The Importance of Play in Everyday Life. The seven-week course uses videos, articles, discussions and activities. It will examine play as the subject of serious study by talking to academics from a variety of disciplines in the university’s Faculty of Social Sciences, where experts will discuss definitions of play and debates about it changes.
A conference takes place today at the university’s Interdisciplinary Centre of the Social Sciences to explore the history of play and how technology and the virtual world have impacted upon it.
MOOCS are a new type of free course being run by universities nationwide. Sheffield University’s MOOCs are being run through Futurelearn, a website linked to the Open University which hosts courses from institutions around the country.
