AN 80-year-old man who was attacked at his home in Rotherham has died.

Tommy Ward was found badly injured at his home on Salisbury Road in Maltby on October 1 last year.

He received ongoing care after the incident but died at Rotherham Hospital on Thursday, February 23.

A post-mortem examination will be carried out to determine what caused Mr Ward’s death.

During the attack, a substantial amount of money is believed to have been taken from Mr Ward’s home, along with a safety deposit box.

A box similar to the one that was reported stolen was recovered in the Kilnhurst area of Rotherham around two weeks later.

Detective Chief Inspector Vicky Short said: “The police investigation surrounding what happened is very much ongoing and officers would still like to speak to witnesses, or anyone who has information about what happened.

“I urge anyone who has even the slightest piece of information to come forward and tell us what you know.”

Two 19-year-old men were previously arrested on suspicion of attempted murder and burglary and were released with no further action.

Anyone with information can call police on 101 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
