Election round-up: National campaigning returns

THE election campaign got back underway today with a Jeremy Corbyn speech on foreign policy.

The Labour leader linked British foreign policy to acts of terror and criticised the Government for cuts to policing.

His speech in London marked the return of national figures to the election campaign which was suspended in the aftermath of the Manchester attack.

A new YouGov poll for the Times suggests Labour has narrowed the gap to the Conservatives to just five percentage points.

Today's other developments:

- Mr Corbyn is due to be interviewed by Andrew Neil on BBC One at 7pm.

- The Institute for Fiscal Studies criticised the lack of detail in both the Conservative and Labour manifestos. IFS deputy director Carl Emmerson said: "The shame of the two big parties' manifestos is that neither sets out an honest set of choices."

- Lib Dem leader Tim Farron criticised Mr Corbyn' for making a "political point" about this weeks events as he campaigned in Manchester and Warrington

- Former deputy prime minister Lord John Prescott is campaigning across the region today.

- Theresa May will not campaign today as she attends a G7 meeting but is expected to return to the UK later.
