Beverley-based Bishop Burton College has announced that it is set to become a strategic research partner for a leading UK supermarket chain and its key meat suppliers.

Working alongside Asda, which has its headquarters in Leeds, students will work on research projects and field trials aimed at improving sustainability within the meat production industry.

In what the College said is the first initiative of its kind, students will also be collaborating with a host of industry partners - Dunbia, Cranswick Country Foods and ABP Food Group.

Jeanette Dawson, principal and chief executive at Bishop Burton College, said the partnership will enhance students’ career prospects.

She said: “I’m particularly proud that, in our 60th year, our first-rate facilities have been chosen to host this unique initiative, which will not only see the College’s students contributing to significant research and development projects, but will also pave the way for them to secure promising careers in the agri-food industry.”

The College and its partners are starting work immediately, with the first projects involving agricultural drone technologies, cattle nutrition trials and CCTV-based research to understand piglet mortality.
