The Hunting Act, never the most popular piece of legislation in the countryside and one that still provokes strong feeling years after its implementation, has consigned hunting with dogs to the history books for now.
However, the proud rural pastime enjoys a reprieve every year at the Great Yorkshire Show, when hunts from across the region showcase their skill in the Main Ring.
Hunts from Harewood and York were among those in attendance this year, with a vast crowd gathering to watch the action unfold.
The compere told the crowd: “Please applaud and wish them well – this is a wonderful sight we have in front of us.
“We will continue to hand down these traditions and skills for generations to come.”
David McCreedy, from Leeds, said for him the horses and hounds were the highlight of his Great Yorkshire Show every year.
