EXAMPLES OF best practice in the beef industry are being shared through a series of one-off farm tours in the region later this month.
The visits are aimed at other beef farmers in Yorkshire and have been arranged by the National Beef Association to take place a day before the NBA Beef Expo. The annual industry summit is expected to draw beef farmers from across the UK and abroad to York Auction Centre on Thursday, May 21.
Host farms for the tours are: Millington Grange, York, home to one of the UK’s largest pedigree herds of Limousin cattle; G D Stephenson & Sons Ltd, a traditional and commercial family farm near Market Weighton; and JSR Farm’s Wold Farm, home of the Givendale herd of stabiliser cows and The Beef Improvement Group’s net efficiency unit at Londesborough Wold, York.
Richard Tasker, chairman of NBA Beef Expo 2015 and partner at York Auction Centre, said: “The aim of the farm tours is to share knowledge so that beef farmers can maximise efficiency on their own farms.
“The three host farms have been specifically chosen to give our visitors an insight as to how Yorkshire pedigree and commercial cattle enterprises are operating their businesses.
“Not only do they highlight the diversity of the beef industry, they will also demonstrate the latest technology being used to monitor and improve efficiency, maximise outputs and reduce costs.”
This year’s NBA farm tours are sponsored by Carlisle-based agricultural machinery and services firm, Carrs Billington.
