Lord Crathorne said that Mr Cowling’s long experience as a highly successful show director made him ideally suited to the role.

“I know Bill will do this admirably and be a great addition to the team,” he said.

Mr Cowling told The Yorkshire Post: “I am absolutely thrilled and delighted.

“This is a huge honour and as a North Yorkshire farmers I feel I represent not only the show but our country’s farming and rural interests.”

It is a particularly special day for the Cowling family, with his Bill’s six-year-old granddaughter Francesca presenting a white rose to the Princess Royal later today.
