Everything looking in place to make big Impact
Richard Fahey and Paul Hanagan have built a partnership that has become the most feared on the northern racing circuit and Total Impact looks another winner for the pair on a fine opening day at York this afternoon.
The five-year-old was formerly in the care of the now retired Charles Cyzer and won a couple of races as a three-year-old from his yard. However, his handicap mark suffered as a consequence and he failed to get on to the scoreboard last season.
Sent to Fahey's well-run stable at Musley Bank before the start of the current campaign, Total Impact showed a glimmer of his old ability on the fibresand surface at Southwell in March before gaining his first success for new connections at Doncaster two weeks ago.
Having once run from a mark of 89, the very speedily-bred son of Pivotal must have thought he was running loose on Town Moor from 14lb lower and though raised 5lb for that victory, he still looks well-treated in the hss.com Handicap.
Kerrin McEvoy was on board at Doncaster and this will only be Paul Hanagan's second ride on him, but everything is in place for a big run, including from a handy low draw.
The HSS Hire Handicap sees the return to the track of Toldo, the 2006 Northumberland Plate hero.
George Moore's classy stayer has been on the injured list since Newcastle and generally needs a run or two to see him at his best. It would be a tremendous training performance by the Middleham handler if he can have the six-year-old fit enough to win this off top weight and he meets some in-form rivals.
Numero Due also missed a big chunk of action after scoring at Warwick in 2006 but he has returned in very good heart and won nicely at Musselburgh last time. He should go well, but a chance is taken with Bollin Felix.
Tim Easterby's charge could do with some rain and with it forecast to have hit York overnight it would be no surprise if the ground became easier.
The four-year-old has never won beyond 1m 6f but has always looked as though a longer trip would suit and he showed up quite nicely on his seasonal return at Doncaster last month.
