Extra distance can help Riggins upset locals
Luca Cumani has a real affiliation with big handicaps on the Knavesmire and has aimed Riggins at today's 50th running of the John Smith's Cup Heritage Handicap for some time.
A very lightly-raced five-year-old, he has always been highly regarded by connections and is probably unfortunate not to be unbeaten.
After one victory on polytrack in each of his first two seasons, he returned to action at Newmarket in May and got no sort of run in a handicap won by Ace Of Hearts.
While he was undoubtedly unlucky that day, there was no denying at Goodwood subsequently after which this race became his target.
The extra quarter-mile will suit him admirably and Neil Callan looks to have picked up a very lucrative ride.
Richard Fahey has won the race three times in recent years, including the last two, and targets the event a long way in advance. He has three entries today but it's Albaqaa who looks the most interesting.
Paul Hanagan takes the ride on this son of Medicean, who has run a couple of fine races on the track this year. They look a threat to Riggins, who can, however, repel the locals.
Frankie Dettori delighted his legion of fans when riding a winner at Thirsk last week – then producing a flying dismount.
He has plenty of chances on Knavesmire today and can gain another victory on Friston Forest in the John Smith's Extra Smooth Silver Cup.
The Godolphin colt was in action in Dubai earlier in the year then showed that this trip held no fears when runner-up to the evergreen Caracciola over 1m 5f here in May.
He has since run a 'blinder' in the Northumberland Plate behind Som Tala and can take care of the exotically-named Furmigadelagiusta, who is in super form for Karl Burke.
