Family's running battle against cancer
A shared passion for jogging will see the friends of a malignant brain tumour sufferer keep the fight against cancer in the family.
All four O'Sullivans will be together in this year's Leeds 10K: Jane Tomlinson's Run For All after the Scarborough family bought places in the event as a Christmas present.
Pam O'Sullivan, 53, an osteopath, says she has become addicted to running and goes out four of five times a week on the resort's Marine Drive.
Her husband Brendan, 52, an acupuncturist , soon joined her – while daughters Rosie, 17, and Annie, 16, followed a couple of years ago.
Now the family, who live in Westbourne Road, Scarborough, where husband and wife run a complementary health clinic in the basement, aims to use its running skills to raise money for Macmillan Cancer Support after purchasing four places in the Leeds 10K.
They are doing so in support of a close family friend Frankie Sturrock, who was diagnosed with a brain tumour in 2000. In 2005 it became malignant and he needed radiotherapy treatment.
As part of his battle against the illness Mr Sturrock, from Folkestone – Mrs O'Sullivan's former boss when she was lecturing in South Kent College – recruited 30 family and friends to share his journey.
They each had plaster masks made which were mounted on white painted plinths. Each of the 30 then had to write something personal about how they felt when they heard Mr Sturrock had been diagnosed.
The display of 30 masks formed the basis of an art display which has been exhibited online at www.headsuwin.net/ and raised a substantial sum for Macmillan.
A Leeds 10K spokesman said: "The family run together on a regular basis and saw this as a perfect opportunity to combine the family enjoyment of running and fundraising for a good cause."
The Yorkshire Post is supporting the 10k event, which this year is on Sunday, June 21, as a media partner. More details about the run can be obtained on www.runforall.com
