Waitrose, the supermarket arm of the John Lewis Partnership, reported a sales increase of 7.2 per cent to £104.5m after the sunny weather lifted strawberry sales by 45 per cent.

Waitrose commercial director Mark Williamson said shoppers have developed a taste for summer food.

“With just a couple of weeks until the clocks go forward, customers have been looking ahead to the summer by stocking up on warm-weather food,” he said.

Other notable shopping trends included strong sales of Mother’s Day gifts.
