Food campaigner's diary of life after prostate diagnosis
Geoff Tansey is a familar name to those in the farming and food industry.
Author of such books as The Future Control of Food and winner of the Derek Cooper Award for Food Campaigner of the Year in the Radio 4 Food & Farming Awards last year, Geoff has campaigned tirelessly to raise awareness about food and farming methods.
In 2005, he was named one of seven Joseph Rowntree Visionaries for a Just and Peaceful World and was given five years to change the world. Geoff, from Hebden Bridge, pledged to work for a fair and sustainable food system. He wanted to change the rules and the law to reflect the interests of the poor and hungry, rather than the interests of large corporations.
To help to achieve this he has been liaising with non-governmental organisations, academics, and leading charities such as Oxfam, and the Food Ethics Council as well as writing and researching. But last year, just three years into his challenge, Geoff was diagnosed with prostate cancer.
He decided to keep an audio diary of his illness and to explore the role of diet. It is a personal and intimate account – his anger at the diagnosis; his frustration that so few know or care about the role of diet and his devastation at the possibility of becoming impotent.
"I wanted to know how I could minimise the risk of it returning and I started to research prostate cancer and what part diet had to play. I discovered in countries like China there is a very low incidence of prostate cancer.
"They eat large amounts of soya but little dairy and red meat. So I adopted an almost vegan type diet although I did keep eating oily fish and and occasional small amount of lamb."
Geoff's diary will be broadcast on Radio 4's You and Yours today, tomorrow and Friday. "I am a little apprehensive,"admits the 59 year old, "but I hope it will help other men dealing with whatever they are facing. I also hope it will encourage people to think more about what we eat and how it can affect our health."
n Geoff Tansey will also be appearing on Radio 4's The Food Programme on Sunday and Monday alongside Margaret Rayman author of The Prostate Care Cookbook.
