LONG delays are expected during this evening’s rush hour after a crash involving a lorry blocked the M62 in West Yorkshire.

The incident happened just before 3pm on the M62 between junctions 22 and 23 at Scammonden, near Huddersfield.

West Yorkshire Police said the lorry collided with the central reservation on the westbound carriageway.

The vehicle shed its load of electrical wire before coming to rest on the hard shoulder.

Nobody was injured but the carriageway was closed for a number of hours while the debris was cleared, leading to delays of up to two hours with traffic stretching back to Gildersome, near Leeds.

Fans travelling to last night’s clash between St Helens and Leeds Rhinos reported long delays but the game kicked off on schedule.

Stars of the Channel 4 hit Fresh Meat, on a fundraising bus tour of universities for Comic Relief, were stranded for hours following the crash.

It meant they had to abandon plans to visit Manchester and Sheffield universities.

During the hold-up comic Jack Whitehall tweeted: “So we have been stuck on the M62 for three hours haven’t moved so sorry to anyone that’s waiting for us.

“We’re stranded.”

They were making their way from Newcastle to Loughborough via different campuses along the way.

This morning the cast of the student-based comedy series served breakfast to bleary-eyed students, with Whitehall getting so hot in the canteen that he stripped to his undies.

He said: “I never had breakfast when I was at university - I don’t think I ever got up in time.”

They later raced tricycles at Durham University and delivered lectures to 550 students in Leeds.

Nixon spoke about Agatha Christie’s Poirot, Whitehall chose to discuss Kriss Akabusi while McHugh opted to talk about the movie Jaws.
