Goalkeeper's death 'not suspicious'

The death of a 24-year-old non-league goalkeeper is not being treated as suspicious, police said.

Rushden and Diamonds footballer Dale Roberts died on Tuesday, the club announced.

His body was found at his home in Higham Ferrers, Northants, police said. It has not yet been revealed how he died but yesterday Northamptonshire Police said there were no suspicious circumstances.

In a statement, Rushden and Diamonds chairman Gary Calder said: "It is with great sadness that this afternoon our England-C goalkeeper Dale Roberts passed away, our thoughts and prayers at this time go to his parents, family and friends."

Tuesday night's FA Trophy Replay between Eastwood Town and Rushden and Diamonds was postponed. But yesterday the club said due to "popular demand", the Nene Park ground would stay open until 7pm for fans to pay tribute to Mr Roberts.

The club has opened a book of condolence.
