Health Matters: Cancer survivor wins book award
Yorkshire health campaigner and cancer survivor Mitzi Blennerhassett has won a top award for her book Nothing Personal – Disturbing undercurrents in cancer care.
Her book, charting her experiences of treatment for cancer, won the General readership, self-help section in the Medical Journalists' Association Open Book Awards
The judges said: "Both judges confessed that they were not usually enthusiastic about personal accounts of illness, as most were effectively a single case history. However, Blennerhassett's book was the exception. It identified so many deficiencies in cancer care and in particular the difficulties medical and other staff had in communicating with patients and understanding their needs.
"This is a book, not just for the general reader, but for every doctor, medical student and nurse to read, whatever their role in the care of all patients. It is a tribute to her that the book is not a bit miserable or depressing, but funny, poignant, thought-provoking and, above all, a wonderful read."
Mitzi, from York, said: "I am amazed that a book on cancer could be described in this way, let alone win a prize. "I wrote it in the hope it might be used in medical education to improve health services, and cancer services in particular, although the issues could apply to any patient. This award should help that aim to become a reality. But it is also a book for the general reader – many people have told me they 'could not put it down' and, after reading it, some patients have been inspired to begin writing their own stories."
Nothing Personal – Disturbing undercurrents in cancer care is published by Radcliffe Publishing.
New health site for NHS Leeds
Following requests from the public, NHS Leeds is designing a new website to be launched later in the year.
It will help NHS Leeds to better serve the needs of patients, carers, NHS staff, the public and everyone else in Leeds who has an interest in the NHS.
It will provide the health information that people need, when they need it. NHS Leeds hope it will encourage everyone to get involved in improving NHS services in Leeds.
To have your say on the design and content of the new website, fill in NHS Leeds' online survey at www.nhsleedssurvey.co.uk and help ensure the new website meets everyone's needs.
