Health Matters: Fundraising idea in full bloom

A Yorkshire flower festival is to raise money for a leading cancer centre, thanks to two dedicated fund-raisers.

Lynn Barghout, from Guiseley and Catherine Gledhill, from Huddersfield, are organising Festival for Life, an Exposition of Floral Fantasy, from

Friday, June 19 to Sunday, June 21, in the grounds of Cannon Hall Museum and Gardens, between Wakefield and Barnsley, to raise funds for the Yorkshire Cancer Centre, based at St James's Hospital in Leeds.

Forty innovative floral designs will be displayed in the magnificent halls and grounds, and demonstrations will be provided by some of Europe's leading florists.

The Yorkshire Cancer Centre serves a catchment of 2.6 million people across Yorkshire.

The centre is aiming to raise 10m to boost clinical research, buy the latest generation of medical equipment, and provide arts and garden projects to enhance the patient environment.

A gala preview evening is being held at the grounds on Thursday, June 18. Entry by ticket only.

Festival for Life, an Exposition of Floral Fantasy is open to the public each day from 10am to 5pm, with the last admission at 4.15pm.

For more information and ticket application, contact Catherine Gledhill on 01484 602662 or email Catherine@ festival4life.org.uk or Lynn, barghout.lynn@gmail.com, or visit www.yorkshirecancer centre.org.uk/events.

Homeopathy and hay fever

Homeopaths in Leeds are targeting hay fever sufferers this summer, offering help to those looking for an alternative to conventional medication to ease their symptoms.

A recent survey on behalf of Nelsons Pharmacy showed that 72 per cent of sufferers would prefer a natural alternative to anti-histamines and 79 per cent would like to access natural treatments on the NHS.

This year's Homeopathy Awareness Week (June 14-21) claims that homeopathic remedies can not only tackle the symptoms when they happen, but by triggering the body's own system of healing, can help to stop the symptoms occurring in the first place.

Local homeopath Soo Lincoln will be at Holland and Barrat in the Bond Street Centre tomorrow (June 18) between 11am and 1pm to hand out information and answer questions about homeopathy.

She explained: "Homeopathy is a system of medicine which is based on treating the individual with highly-diluted substances given

in mainly tablet form, which triggers the body's natural system of healing.

"A homeopath will match the most appropriate medicine to the patient."
