NHS staff are holding an event to highlight the availability of services to tackle domestic abuse.
Each year police in Harrogate deal with 1,500 reports of domestic abuse, with many more cases unreported.
The toll will be marked on Monday on the town’s Stray with the launch of 104 purple balloons for every woman who dies in the UK from abuse and 17 green balloons for each man who dies. Information will also be available at the town’s hospital which is launching a new domestic abuse policy.
Sarah Hill, director of the local charity Independent Domestic Abuse Service, said last year it accommodated over 30 families in the women’s refuge in Harrogate and supported nearly 400 people in the town but despite its impact on people, it remained a “largely hidden problem”.
