Bosses at insurance brokers Henderson are set to take on the ride of their lives when they cycle 160 miles across the country to raise money to help a local woman injured in a car crash.

Chief executive of Henderson Insurance Broking Group Joe Henderson will be joined by colleagues, friends and clients for the coast-to-coast ride from Whitehaven to Sunderland.

The ride will be in aid of local woman Emily Storer, aged 26, was involved in a serious car accident five years ago, where she suffered a spinal cord injury which left her paralysed from the chest down. However earlier this year she was given the opportunity to have a test session on a device known as “a ReWalk exoskeleton”, a robotic device that allows her to stand and walk again despite having no sensation or feeling in her legs.

Ms Storer hopes to ride will help fund the £65,000 cost of the device.

She spent five months in Pinderfields hospital, Wakefield, learning the basics of living life as a full time wheelchair user.

She said; “I can honestly say it was the most incredible experience. My friends and family who saw me in it just said the smile on my face said it all! The benefits you gain from using it are huge, both mentally and physically. The only thing holding me back from having one of these devices to benefit me is the cost.”

The device costs a huge £65,000, to which Emily hopes to find the support of donations to help her on her journey.

Mr Henderson said: “This device, without a doubt will change Emily’s life. I think most will agree that her story highlights that your life can change overnight but through all of the adversity, Emily has had a positive attitude throughout. As a company and a community we should support her in being able to have the chance to walk again and although this is a great start for Emily, I encourage friends, family, colleagues and local communities to support this campaign in some way”
