Hendry and Davis share mixed fortune

Crucible legends Stephen Hendry and Steve Davis shared the headlines in an entertaining Monday at the 888.com World Championship.

Seven-time winner Hendry pipped Mark Allen 10-9, winning the last four frames after trailing 9-6, and it looked like Davis was going to do something similar in his first-round match against Stuart Bingham. Click the green PLAY button to hear Hendry's reaction.

Trailing 8-3, Davis - who has won the world title a mere six times - battled back to level at 8-8. But Bingham managed to sneak the 17th frame on the black before a 59 break clinched victory.

Hendry said: "It was probably the greatest first round match I've ever won here in all the years I've been coming. I was up against it from being 1-0 up and I just hung in there and refused to go down. One thing I've always had is big balls.

"You have to take confidence from a win like this, to be up against it the whole match and come through at the end and to win the last frame in style in one visit is very pleasing.

"Every player will tell you they're playing well in practise but it means nothing. It's out in the arena that matters."

For 50-year-old Davis, provisionally ranked 27th going into this tournament, defeat means he will have to join the qualifiers next year's World Championship.

Elsewhere, Welshman Ryan Day beat Michael Judge 10-6 and Mark Williams stormed into an 8-1 lead against Mark Davis, needing just two more frames to win when their match resumes on Tuesday.
