How to look fabulous at fifty this Christmas

We all want to look special on Christmas Day. Watch as we dress three 55-plus real-life models in festive outfits from Marks and Spencer.

IT'S the annual Christmas Day dilemma: how to dress festively without looking like the fairy who fell off the top of the tree? It's Christmas, and glamour is part of the mix, but it does have to come with a reasonable dose of practicality.~

Step in our three real-life models, all over 55, who show off our suggestions for looks to go for on Christmas Day, using clothes and accessories from Marks & Spencer.~

Vee Duggan is a retired PA from Castleford. She will be cooking Christmas dinner for 10, wearing a little black dress and high heels.

Judy Walker, a retired PA from Pontefract, will be wearing a blue dress and five-inch stilettos as she cooks dinner for eight at home, and Carol Smith will be wearing a black skirt and red blouse as she also conjures up the annual Christmas culinary miracle. We've gone for four different Christmas Day looks here.

The first is an Elegant Statement Look, with bold dresses (a red one, a leopard print and a sexy LBD) and killer shoes. The second is a Cosy Luxe Look, which is a little less high-maintenance, mixing smart stretch jeans and trousers with satiny or embellished tops and luxurious knits – easy to wear but still high glamour.~

Look three is our Sassy Luxe Look, teaming sheeny and sequinned tunics with luxurious knitwear – a key look for the winter season and perfect to wear with both shoes and boots. The final look is a traditional Party Glam Look, mixing jewel bright shift dresses with faux fur capes (ideal for New Year, especially if venturing outdoors).~

West Row Creative created the three Christmas Day hair styles. Guy Sutcliffe says: "Rollers are easy to use and highly effective for the festive season. You can pop them in when you get up and even keep them in while you cook, removing when you're ready – you just need to shake out and run fingers through to break up the waves.~

"Try using heated rollers to create volume and curl, and apply a mousse such as Expansion Mousse by L'Oreal texture expert (13.25) first so they really stay put without being crunchy. Velcro rollers are great for volume. Use when the hair is dry with a setting lotion such as Pli by L'Oreal Tecni Art (10) – these are great to leave in while you're doing your make-up."

Bobbi Brown make-up artist Deborah Mills says: "We've done a classic look with defined eyes and neutral but strong lips. Carol has a glamorous evening look and we have made huge feature of her eyes. The best tip is the Bobbi Brown Intensive Skin Serum, 38.50, which you put on before a moisturiser. It's ideal for Christmas Day in the kitchen."
