LABOUR's Police and crime commissioner candidate for Humberside has branded the Conservatives 'desperate' after his record as a police officer was questioned by a senior minister.

Keith Hunter responded to Leader of the Commons Chris Grayling’s comments by publishing a report written by an inspector from HM Inspectorate of Constabulary (HMIC) praising his work and confirming he was considered suitable for promotion to be a chief officer.

He subsequently decided instead to retire from Humberside Police, where he was a chief superintendent, and set up his own consultancy business.

Speaking in the Commons on Thursday, Mr Grayling told MPs he had heard “allegations about the Labour PCC candidate in Humberside”.

He added: “If the stories alleged about that candidate are true, he is unfit for public office, and it is a matter of public interest that the truth should be known before election day.”

Mr Hunter said: “I was surprised and disappointed that they should stoop to such a level.

“In some ways, the positive side is it shows the effect my campaign is having for them to stoop to this level.

“Staring defeat in the face they’ve thought that there’s nothing else to do.”

The Conservatives’ Matthew Grove is seeking a second term as PCC in next week’s election.
